    Description

    Phenylephrine (CAS 59-42-7) is a synthetic drug that appears as a white or almost white crystalline powder. It shares both chemical and pharmacological similarities with norepinephrine. One of its distinctive characteristics is its strong selectivity for α-adrenoreceptors, particularly α1-adrenoreceptors. Despite its ability to increase the contractibility of blood vessels, phenylephrine is not typically regarded as a cardiostimulant.

    Uses

    By acting on adrenergic α1 receptors, phenylephrine induces contractions in aortic smooth muscles. Phenylephrine has clinical applications, including its use as an oral decongestant. It acts on adrenergic α1 receptors in nasal arterioles, causing constriction and reducing nasal congestion. It is also employed as a topical nasal decongestant and a mydriatic agent for dilating the pupil in ophthalmology. In some cases, phenylephrine has been used to raise blood pressure and terminate episodes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, especially when hypotension is also present.
